Calls of a broken Britain, plagued by the cost of living, a stretched NHS, and forgotten towns and cities, will be echoing in Andy Burnham’s ears as he becomes PM.

His in-tray will be bulging with problems to solve and the need for “growth in every postcode” to be realised, in every sense of the word.

As he takes the train down from Manchester towards No 10, and contemplates where on earth to start, he should look out of the window.

The fields, woods and rivers that fill the horizon are all part of the solution.

Evidence shows that nature can play a key role in tackling Britain’s problems.

More nature means long-term food security, clean water, improved public health, and boosted community pride.

The public, of all political persuasions, understand that the foundations of Britain rest on the natural world – when it flourishes, we do.

Britain has many problems, but nature can help fix them.

As Andy Burnham gets on that southbound train, he should take heart from the green solutions outside his window and remember how he improved lives in Manchester with more nature.

When mayor of Manchester, Burnham created the city’s first new park in a century, established an annual Green Summit to bring new green jobs to the area, and set up a £4million fund to bring nature to people.

Against Sir Keir Starmer’s record of scapegoating nature at every turn, falsely blaming bats and newts for a lack of growth, might the new PM offer a glimmer of hope?

We cannot afford another prime minister who turns his back on wildlife, and the British public who unanimously want to see it flourish in all corners of the UK.

If Mr Burnham is serious about fixing the nation’s problems, he must unlock nature’s potential to help achieve growth in every postcode. By helping birds, bees and trees to thrive in Britain, we too can thrive alongside them.
