Police appeared to clash with balaclava-clad protesters in Glasgow overnight who chanted ‘send them home’ and ‘we’ve had enough’.

Videos circulating on social media showed around two dozen people wearing balaclavas making the chants towards police officers who blocked a road in the Scottish city. Another video showed the group walking through the streets of Shettleston, reportedly to protest HMOs.

Some clips showed arrests being made by officers. It is not clear when the arrests took place, how many people were detained, or the reason for being taken into custody.

It appears the protest calmed down before midnight, according to reports on social media.

What happened this evening?

It appears protesters chanting ‘send them home’ amassed in Glasgow’s East End at around 8pm this evening, walking through the city’s streets.

Later, they appear to have clashed with police at the junction of Gallowgate, Duke Street and Tollcross Road in Shettleston in Glasgow.

Several people appear to have been arrested. Police Scotland are yet to issue a formal statement on this incident.

Using videos posted online and information provided by Glasgow City Council, it can be said the confrontation between police and protesters took place at the junction of Gallowgate, Duke Street, and Tollcross Road in Shettleston in Glasgow’s East End.

Traffic stopped for ‘police incident’ – reports

According to Scots newspaper The National, Glasgow City Council confirmed traffic was being held around Parkhead Cross just before 8pm.

At 7:56pm on Wednesday, the council said: “Due to an ongoing Police incident Traffic is not currently permitted to pass through Parkhead Cross.

“This affects Tollcross Road, Duke Street. Westmuir Street and Springfield Road.

“Emergency services are in attendance. Road users are advised to avoid this area until further notice.”
