Protesters are gathering in a Nottinghamshire town as fury mounts following posts by MP Lee Anderson. The Reform UK MP claimed a man charged with rape in Sutton in Ashfield, in his constituency, is an asylum seeker.
While the claims that the offender was an asylum seeker have not been verified, they have sparked protesters in the town centre on Friday (July 25). A counter protest by Stand Up To Racism is also planned to take place.
Pictures from the protest show crowds gathering and marching through the town centre. Some of the protesters are carrying Saint George’s Cross and Union Jack flags while others are chanting derogatory comments about Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer.
Nottinghamshire Police confirmed that a man was arrested after a woman was reportedly raped at Sutton Lawn. He appeared at Nottingham Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday, July 22 and was remanded in custody until August 19, as reported by Nottinghamshire Live.

Lee Anderson contacted for comment
Nottinghamshire Live has contacted Lee Anderson following his claims on social media. However, he has not replied.
‘Aggressive atmosphere
Nottinghamshire Live reporter Louis Dargavel Corbett is at the scene of the protest this evening. He is believed to be the only media on the scene.
He estimates there are around 300 people protesting against illegal immigration. Meanwhile, there are only around a dozen counter-protesters.
He says: “It’s an aggressive atmosphere, people seem charged with hate towards the government with much of the blame landing solely on Keir Starmer.
“People are leaning out of car windows shouting in support, Union flags are being flown out of flat windows above street level and a significant amount of people are drinking heavily.”
Flags on display at protest
As reported by Nottinghamshire Live, a number of Saint George’s Cross and Union Jack flags are on display at the protest in Sutton in Ashfield.
Some of the protesters are chanting “stop the boats” as they march through the town.

‘Today we say it’s enough’, organiser says
Liam, who is believed to have helped organise the protest, tells the crowds on a microphone: “We are ordinary people with jobs to go to, and families to look after, no one wants this hassle.
“Right here we want you to know you [victims of sexual offences] are not alone. The British government want to pull the wool over our eyes but today we say not anymore. Today we say it’s enough.”
He has a Union flag draped around his shoulders and the crowd reply with cheers.

Counter protest planned
Stand Up To Racism has confirmed that a counter protest is also planned today.
A statement from Richard Buckwell, Joint Secretary of the organisation said: “Anderson and the far right push the racist lie that refugees and migrants pose a particular threat to women.
“Yet around 84 percent of female victims of sexual assault know their perpetrator, who is most likely to be either an intimate partner or acquaintance.
“Targeting minorities and vulnerable people fleeing war and persecution does not protect women and girls.”
What have police confirmed?
While Mr Anderson’s claims that the offender is an asylum seeker are yet to be verified, Nottinghamshire Police confirmed that a man was arrested after a woman was allegedly raped at Sutton Lawn.
He appeared at Nottingham Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday, July 22 and was remanded in custody until August 19.
