It was the final PMQs that Sir Keir Starmer will take part in before he steps down.

But there will be no chance to question Mr Burnham, who enters 10 Downing Street on Monday, because Parliament is about to break up for the summer holidays, and will not return until September 1.

Mrs Badenoch said she disagreed with Sir Keir “but at least he turned up” – unlike Mr Burnham.

Despite clashing with Sir Keir many times in the past, she had some kind words for the outgoing Prime Minister today. Mrs Badenoch praised him for “showing leadership” over Ukraine.

And she paid tribute to former Conservative Minister Ann Widdecombe following her shocking killing. Mrs Badenoch told the House of Commons: “She was a woman of high principle, profound beliefs with a wicked sense of humour.”

Sir Keir also said he was “horrified” by the murder of Miss Widdecombe – and suggested there should be a memorial for her in Parliament.
