Andy Burnham heads back to Westminster today after Donald Trump‘s team issued a warning against making Ed Miliband Chancellor. Senior officials in the US President’s administration are said to have privately warned that the move would be a “mistake”.

They have expressed concerns over the Energy Secretary’s opposition to new oil and gas drilling in the North Sea, and they believe the ban on new licences is “ideologically driven”, and that tax raised from lifting it could be used to boost defence spending, according to The Times. It comes amid intense speculation over who Mr Burnham will make Chancellor, which has focused on Mr Miliband.

Labour closes gap with Reform in new poll

Reform UK has a slim lead over Labour in the latest polling by Ipsos.

Nigel Farage‘s party is on 26%, while Labour is up four points to 24% and the Tories are third with 18%.

Labour’s boost comes as Andy Burnham is set to enter Downing Street within weeks following Sir Keir Starmer‘s resignation.

Starmer to hang St George’s Cross on no10 in coming days to celebrate footie

The Prime Minister watched England play Mexico in the World Cup round of 16 match on Monday morning. Sir Keir Starmer stayed up to do so. He watched it upstairs in the Downing Street flat with his son. He is a touch sleep deprived on Monday morning but incredibly proud of the team and incredibly proud to be English after that performance.

He’s seen England play over many years, but this morning was victory in the heat of the Azteca Stadium, and at altitude, and against the host nation is up there for him, one of England’s best ever performances. He’s very much looking forward to the quarterfinal on Saturday.

In the coming days, the St George’s Cross will hang high and proudly over number 10 and down the street.
