Coughlans Bakery has announced it is closing all 31 stores after being in business for nearly 90 years. The family-run chain, part-owned by comedian Romesh Ranganathan, has ceased trading with immediate effect after going into liquidation.

Managing Director Sean Coughlan and Romesh confirmed the news, saying “gutted isn’t the word”. Voughlan had been operating since 1937, with locations across South London, Surrey, Kent, and West Sussex.

Coughlan described the decision as “devastating”, saying the business had been hit by spiralling operational costs that left it unable to continue.

He confirmed the closures in a video message shared on Tuesday, telling customers the decision had “affected us more than we could have ever imagined”.

Coughlan also thanked staff and customers for their loyalty over the years, describing the closure as deeply emotional for the entire team.
