Brexit heavyweights have warned that Labour is “betraying” the opportunities on offer from exiting the EU.
Nigel Farage, Boris Johnson, Kemi Badenoch and Jacob Rees-Mogg have backed a Daily Express campaign demanding Sir Keir Starmer “Gives Us a Proper Brexit” ahead of the 10th anniversary of the referendum.
Reform UK leader Nigel Farage slammed how “betrayal has followed betrayal” despite more than 17 million people voting to leave the Bloc.
He said: “The many benefits of our hard-fought Brexit freedoms are still there to be seized yet bafflingly Labour shows every sign of wanting to drag us back under the heel of Brussels. Are they completely mad?”
The Brexit architect added: “The truth is this Labour government is hellbent on blaming all the country’s current travails on Brexit simply to mask their own incompetence.”
Former Prime Minister Mr Johnson told how it had been six years since Express readers helped “finally deliver Brexit”.
The newspaper became the first in 2010 to declare Britain must leave the EU.
He said: “This country took back control of its laws, its borders and huge sums of money we were sending to Brussels.
“Within less than a year, Brexit proved its worth as our regulatory freedom allowed the UK to vaccinate its population faster than any other European country.
“That meant we came out of Covid lockdowns faster and had a faster economy rebound than any country in the G7. Brexit immediately paid off – saving lives and saving jobs.”
But Mr Johnson, a central figure in delivering Brexit, told how the UK is “groaning” under the “economic misery” of Sir Keir’s government.
The former Conservative leader, who won the 2019 general election on the promise to “get Brexit done”, said: “The UK is now groaning under the economic misery of a high tax, high regulation, high unemployment Labour government.
“To make matters worse, the Starmer government is keeping us in lockstep with the sclerotic EU economy.
“Labour is failing to take advantage of Brexit. By slowly taking us back into the orbit of Brussels the Starmer government is destroying Brexit.
“They are destroying the UKs potential to do things differently and better. It is time to stand up for our hard won democratic freedoms.
“And Save Brexit from Starmer.”
The Express’s crusade will call for leaving the European Convention on Human Rights (ECHR), slashing red tape for businesses and enforcing a 12 mile exclusion zone around the UK for British vessels only.
It comes as the Prime Minister has pushed for closer post-Brexit economic relations with the Bloc since coming into power in July 2024.
Sir Keir said this week that he wants to “go further” in moving Britain closer to the EU single market as he cranked up his plot to reverse Brexit.
This is despite a manifesto promise not to rejoin the EU single market or customs union.
Speaking to reporters en-route to China, where he is in the middle of a trade visit, the Prime Minister said: “I do think that we’ve made progress on the single market – food and agriculture is already in the Sanitary and Phytosanitary (SPS) agreement that we have already agreed and that’s going to be implemented.
“That’s an agreement which will bring cheaper prices in our supermarkets.”
But Sir Keir said he wants to go further.
“I think we should not just follow through on what we’ve already agreed. I think the relationship with the EU and every summit should be iterative. We should be seeking to go further.
“And I think there are other areas in the single market where we should look to see whether we can make more progress.”
Europe Minister Nick Thomas-Symonds and Business Secretary Peter Kyle will hold talks about EU alignment with their European counterparts on Tuesday.
It comes ahead of the next UK-EU summit, which is expected to take place in May.
The UK is already lining up with Brussels on some rules around food and agriculture to allow access to the economic European trading zone.
Joining the EU’s single market would eliminate trade tariffs between Britain and the EU but Westminster would have to follow rules set by Brussels and accept free movement of people.
Tory leader Kemi Badenoch said: “We have the opportunity to make Britain more competitive than Europe, to use the very best of British education, engineering and enterprise to attract investment and ensure we have a strong economy and more, better-paid jobs.
“But, under Labour unemployment has gone up almost every month and economic growth has stagnated. Keir Starmer is dragging us backwards, re-fighting the battles of the past, too busy trying to save his own skin than do what’s best for our country.
“He is letting Brussels set our rules again, which will be worse for British farmers and producers. Only the Conservatives have a plan to seize the opportunities on offer as an independent nation to ensure a stronger economy and a stronger country.”
Several of Sir Keir’s Cabinet colleagues have broken ranks in recent months to suggest Britain should rejoin the EU customs union.
Health Secretary Wes Streeting and Deputy Prime Minister David Lammy, have said a customs union would boost economic growth as Labour struggles to deliver on promises to increase GDP.
Leading Brexiteer and former Cabinet Minister Sir Jacob said: “Brexit remains a great opportunity for this country. We need massive deregulation to help businesses thrive. This should include repealing the EU-inspired Climate Change Act and habitat directives which stop building and add costs to infrastructure such as the batty bat tunnel.
“The City of London does not want to be part of the reset because it is already harvesting the benefits of freedom; the rest of the economy ought to be allowed the same chance.”
The UK formally left the EU single market and customs union at 11pm on 31 December 2020.
It followed a June 2016 referendum where 17.4 million people voted to leave the EU, with a split of 52% versus 48%.
A Labour source said: “We have secured historic trade agreements with the US, India, EU, and South Korea, which will grow the economy, back British jobs, and put more money in people’s pockets.
“The idea we have to choose between these is wrong. It’s the Tories who failed to make the UK a great trading nation post-Brexit and Nigel Farage who says he’d rip up our deals.”
