Mum’s anguish as asylum seeker jailed for raping her teenage daughter: ‘why was he here?’

The distraught mother of a 15-year-old girl raped by an asylum seeker has demanded answers, asking, “Why was he here?” She says her family will never recover from the horrific attack by Amin Abedi Mofrad, who was sentenced to 12½ years in prison yesterday.

In a letter to the Home Secretary, the mother questioned why the violent criminal, who had 11 previous convictions in Germany, was allowed to roam the streets of Britain. She said her daughter “now carries a pain and trauma no child should ever know,” adding, “She has been handed a life sentence.”

Predator attacked teenager on Valentine’s Day

The 35-year-old Iranian predator dragged the girl down an alleyway as she walked home from an under-18s club night in Oxford on Valentine’s Day last year. Her friend managed to take a photo of him as they escaped.

Mofrad was convicted of rape and sexual assault last month. During sentencing at Oxford Crown Court, Judge Maria Lamb said he was “a significant risk of committing this sort of offence again.”

Mum holds Home Office responsible for attack

The victim’s mother believes the Home Office shares responsibility for the attack. Mofrad arrived illegally on a small boat in 2023 and was arrested on suspicion of sexual assault that year, but the case was dropped due to lack of evidence.

“There should have been checks done on this man when he came here, not after he raped my child,” she said. “They would have found that he had convictions in Germany, and so he was a danger to Britain. He should never have been in the community.”

Mofrad faces death penalty in Iran, court hears

Tamasin Graham, mitigating, told the court that Mofrad faced the death penalty in Iran as he “turned his back on Islam.” The judge ruled that he must serve at least nine and a half years in prison.

As he was led away, Mofrad screamed, “Everybody lies! Lies, lies, lies!”

The Home Office said, “We will seek to deport foreign nationals who commit crimes on British soil. We have returned over 35,000 people with no right to be here in the Gove
