Trump celebrates with one special gesture exactly one year since surviving assassination

US President Donald Trump, was spotted raising his fist in a defiant gesture as he commemorated the one-year anniversary of an assassination attempt on him.

Trump, accompanied by First Lady Melania Trump, was attending the FIFA Club World Cup at New Jersey’s MetLife Stadium on Sunday afternoon.

The raised fist was reminiscent of the same gesture he made last year when he narrowly escaped a bullet during a shooting incident at a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, while campaigning for presidency.

His only public acknowledgement of the anniversary was through a pre-recorded Fox News interview with his daughter-in-law, Lara Trump, which aired on Saturday night. Critics were quick to criticise his appearance in the segment, likening him to “the hunchback of Notre Dame,” and suggesting he looked as if he were “sitting on the toilet.”

The football match is considered a precursor to next year’s premier global football tournament, set to be hosted in North America, reports the Mirror US.

The Trumps journeyed from his golf club in Bedminster, New Jersey, to East Rutherford, approximately 40 miles away, to watch the final match of the U.S.-hosted tournament.

Their arrival was nothing short of dramatic, with a convoy of three helicopters flying over MetLife Stadium before the match began. The crowd erupted into cheers as the convoy flew overhead.

Security measures were significantly ramped up at the stadium due to the Trumps’ expected attendance.

Paris Saint-Germain was scheduled to face Chelsea at the iconic stadium set to host the 2026 World Cup Final. The Trumps were expected to watch PSG’s attempt to secure its fourth major title of the season, exactly 100 days after winning the Ligue 1 title on April 5.

The team clinched the Coupe de France title after a 3-0 victory over Reims on May 24, followed by a triumph over Inter Milan in the Champions League Final a week later.

Sporting events have constituted the majority of the president’s domestic trips since his return to office in January. He has attended the Super Bowl in New Orleans, the Daytona 500 in Florida, UFC fights in Miami and Newark, New Jersey, and the NCAA wrestling championships in Philadelphia.

Trump enjoys a cordial relationship with FIFA President Gianni Infantino and has expressed his intention to attend several matches of next year’s World Cup tournament, which will be hosted across the U.S., Canada and Mexico.

Preparations for North America’s big football moment next year are well underway, despite escalating tensions between the U.S. and its neighbours over proposed tariffs, immigration and Trump’s repeated suggestion that Canada should become the 51st state.

Earlier this year, the president suggested that these tensions would only add to the excitement of the tournament, stating, “Tension’s a good thing.”
