Rochdale fire: Huge blaze rips through building as ‘avoid area’ warning issued

Emergency services are responding to a building fire in Rochdale as locals are told to avoid the area. Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service (GMFRS) responded to reports of a blaze at a commercial building off Mellor Street at 3.15am. Firefighters remain on scene this morning. A cordon has since been put in place across the street and nearby College Road, between Spotland and the town centre.

A GMFRS spokesperson said: “Shortly after 3:15am this morning, several fire engines including the hydraulic platform from Oldham were called to attend a fire involving a commercial building near Mellor Street, Rochdale. Crews arrived quickly and using two ultra high pressure lances and two hose reels to extinguish the fire. They worked alongside Greater Manchester Police and North West Ambulance Service to ensure the area was safe.”

A video from the scene of the blaze, which is now extinguished, shows firefighters still at the scene and a cordon in place.

The garage’s roof has also partially collapsed.

Firefighter injured tackling blaze

A firefighter has been injured while tackling the blaze, Greater Manchester Police said.

The injury is believed to be minor and no members of the public were hurt.

A GMFRS spokesperson said: “Shortly after 3:15am this morning, three fire engines from Rochdale and Heywood fire stations plus the hydraulic platform from Oldham fire station were called to a fire involving a commercial building on Mellor Street, Rochdale.

“Firefighters arrived quickly and used two ultra high pressure lances and two hose reels to extinguish the fire. Crews remain at the scene alongside partners, with road closures in place, to ensure the area is safe.”

Fire extinguished

GMFRS said the fire has been extinguished using two ultra high pressure lances and two hose reels to extinguish the fire.

However, crews still remain on scene.

Roads have been closed around the fire, causing traffic to build up in Rochdale.

A cordon has been put in place across Mellor Street and nearby College Road, between Spotland and the town centre.
