Rachel Reeves is facing a nightmare on Downing Street today after the Prime Minister appeared to chastise her in a new letter late last night.
No. 10 published a letter from Sir Keir to the Chancellor following further revelations about her unlicensed rental home in South London, in which the PM said it was “clearly regrettable” that neither Ms Reeves nor her husband unearthed key emails when the story first broke on Wednesday evening.
Sir Keir appears to be standing by his Chancellor, insisting the row remains a case of “inadvertent failure… which you have apologised for and are now rectifying”, adding he sees “no need for any further action”.
However the Tories are pressing hard for a full sleaze probe, insisting it is still a story about Ms Reeves breaking the law.

Starmer deletes embarrassing tweet about renters’ rights
Keir Starmer appears to have deleted an embarrassing tweet about renters’ rights, at the same time his Chancellor is embroiled in a row about letting her home without the correct licence.
Reeves departure odds shorten
Rachel Reeves is now 2/1 with William Hill to leave her role as Chancellor of the Exchequer in what remains of 2025.
They were as big as 6/1 earlier this week.
Spokesperson for William Hill, Lee Phelps, said: “Rachel Reeves is under scrutiny this week after her ‘regrettable’ oversight made around rental licensing. As a result, we’ve slashed her odds of not seeing out the year in her current role as Chancellor to 2/1 from 6/1 earlier this week.
“While it’s being reported that the Prime Minister will take no disciplinary action over the situation, we have a 2026 exit the most likely outcome for Reeves at 4/7.
“Remaining in her role for at least another 14 months seems less likely and we’re 10/1 Reeves doesn’t leave her position until 2027 or indeed 2028. The next general election is set to be called in 2029 at the very latest, and a departure in four years’ time is a long shot at 12/1.”
Priti Patel says Reeves should be sacked
Shadow Foreign Secretary Dame Priti Patel has said Rachel Reeves should be sacked for breaking housing laws.
She fumed: “Reeves should be removed from office for breaking the law and committing a criminal offence.
“Starmer’s judgement is so bad.
“With Reeves misleading him on her own affairs, what else is she hiding from him?
“Perhaps the real state of the U.K. economy…”
