Patrick O’Flynn was a true great (Image: PA)
Former Daily Express political editor and Brexit “titan” Patrick O’Flynn has died at the age of 59. The former European Parliament member enjoyed a stellar career at the heart of Westminster’s lobby lasting more than 20 years. In addition to the Daily Express, Patrick worked for the Birmingham Post and the Sunday Express. He served as political editor and later chief comment editor at the Express, spearheading the newspaper’s campaign to take Britain out of the European Union.
Patrick O’Flynn was one of the true greats. Few were as instrumental as he in making the case for the United Kingdom leaving the European Union.
Political earthquakes are often mentioned, but like so many cliches it is almost always misapplied to the subject matter. What would become known as Brexit was a genuine political earthquake.
And shifting the political plates under the feet of Westminster’s not-so-great and neither-so-good was Patrick O’Flynn. He is one reason that mainstream politicians can address the issue of migration to this country without being shut up by false allegations of racism.
He encouraged a brow-beaten Britain not just to care about sovereignty, but to reassert it in the face of overwhelming, at times government-sponsored, opposition.
His words, whether spoken on television or written in our pages, were instruments of true patriotism. A slingshot to bring to send the Goliath of Europe scrambling.
Few politicos make such an impact. Which is why, after the sad news of Mr O’Flynn’s death, we are inviting Daily Express readers to post their tributes below.
