Our greatest Crusade: How the Daily Express fought for YOUR Brexit

For decades the Daily Express’s crusade to see Britain retain its independence from Brussels has been at the very forefront of our service to you.

Your paper has long been dubious about the arguments for closer alignment with Europe, and declared in 1973 that joining the European Economic Community would be “a mistake.”

Since then this paper has stood alongside millions of readers who patriotically believed our country deserved to stand defiantly outside the EU.

For decades, your paper demanded a referendum, fought against the meddling of eurocrats, and then held those who sought to frustrate the will of the British people to account.

At every stage the Daily Express has championed British sovereignty, and been proud to do so.

In November 2010 we made history by becoming the first national paper to demand the UK left the EU. Our editor at the time, Peter Hill, understood that our readers had long since lost faith in an overbearing Brussels elite.

This paper declared on its front page: “From this day forth our energies will be directed to further the cause of those who believe Britain is Better Off Out.”

And those energies have never dwindled, despite the sneers of some in the political establishment.

With the unwavering support of our readers, the Daily Express launched a campaign to gather petitions in their hundreds of thousands to demand then-Prime Minister David Cameron put our freedom to a vote.

And he did so, in 2013, announcing there would be that long-awaited referendum.

Since then this paper has not stopped. The Daily Express refused to be cowed, and we marched with our readers to inform the nation of the risks of uncontrolled immigration, ludicrous EU waste, and the diktats of eurocrats in Brussels far removed from the impact of their law-making.

When the day came and 17.4million Britons chose to free the UK from Europe, the Daily Express knew that the fight was far from over.

Our energies continued to be put to use, as we exposed those in Westminster and Brussels who then sought to frustrate that process.

We called out those who attempted to call a re-run of the vote they had lost, and since the day we left, we have never stopped campaigning to ensure we get a proper Brexit, the one YOU voted for.

Despite the many twists and turns, this paper has shone a light on efforts by those in power to bring Britain closer to Europe through the back door.

We’ve railed against plans by the Government to “reset” relations with the bloc Britons voted overwhelmingly to separate from.

And throughout it all the Daily Express has remained on the front line with you, demanding MPs and peers respect the will of the British people.

Now 10 years on from the day we left the EU, the Daily Express’s greatest ever Crusade continues, as we press on to ensure that a proper Brexit is delivered for you.
